The Council OSCOM meeting which discusses the formal inclusion of Manydown in the Local Plan for development post 2011 was held at Queen Mary's College on Wednesday 23 July. Despite 17 out of the 20 speakers opposing the development, the voting still went along party lines, with the ruling coalition of Liberals and Labour voting in favour for the development, and the Conservatives against. Shame that councillors cannot think for themselves, isn't it?

SaveManydown.org.uk has been set up to provide the residents of Basingstoke with up-to-date information on the campaign to prevent the development of the Manydown Estate west of Roman Road. Over the coming days and weeks this site will be updated.

The campaign is being fronted by Stephen Reid, an ex-leader of the Borough council and experienced political campaigner. Following a successful public meeting on Monday 23rd June at Fort Hill, attended by approximately 100 residents, the nucleus of an action group is being formed. A further meeting is scheduled for Thursday 3rd July to formalise tactics.

In the meantime, this website is currently under development - much more will be added in the coming weeks as the campaign gathers momentum. An update from SOVAG, the Save Oakley Village Action Group, has now been attached (9/7/03).

To complement the website, we have set up an e-mail discussion group on which residents and others can voice their views on this major issue. To subscribe, simply send an e-mail to savemanydown-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Once this has been done, when an e-mail is sent to savemanydown@yahoogroups.com, your posting will be circulated to all other members of the group - an easy way to keep in touch and discuss the latest news.
